A Partnership Rooted in Impact

We are honored to work with Long Miles Coffee for the first time after having their coffees for years from a lot of our roaster friends. Founders, Ben and Kristy Carlson, moved to Burundi in 2011 and saw that both injustice and poor farming practices permeated the country’s newly privatized coffee industry. They also saw that roasters around the world had a difficult time getting consistently great coffees from Burundi. In an effort to see positive change in both farmers’ and roasters’ lives, Long Miles Coffee was born.

To them, coffee production is a combined effort that takes into account the needs of coffee farmers and the needs of the roasters they work with worldwide. When you trust them with a coffee order not only do you get a thoughtfully produced coffee, but you directly impact coffee farming communities. Beyond that, you have the opportunity to build relationships with specific hills and those who grow coffee there, year upon year.

Coffee holds so much potential. It has the ability to change a landscape and transform a people, but it is so easy to feel distant from the origin of your coffees and the impact your purchase makes on coffee-growing communities. We understand your need for both transparency and great coffee, which is why we started Long Miles Coffee as a farmer-driven coffee production model back in 2013. In thier first coffee season they worked with just fifty coffee farmers, they now work directly with over 14,000 coffee farming families on traceable and unique hills within Burundi, Uganda, and Kenya.

Great coffee takes time.

Resting our coffees is something we’ve practiced for a long time because we believe it delivers the best possible tasting experience. As a modern, forward-thinking coffee company, we roast our coffees lightly to showcase clarity, sweetness, and nuance. These lighter roasts—especially those sourced from higher elevations—tend to be denser and hold more gas after roasting, which means they benefit from a longer rest period. In our experience, most of our coffees taste their best 3+ weeks after the roast date for both filter and espresso. Some particularly dense, high-elevation coffees may need even more time to fully open up. When properly rested, our coffees show greater complexity, deeper sweetness, and a more balanced, expressive cup. This is because the beans have had time to release the excess gases built up during roasting, allowing the inner structure of the coffee to stabilize and the flavors to fully develop. Great coffee takes time—and we’ve found that giving it that time makes all the difference.

Inside the Cup

"This coffee is a beautiful example of the terroir of Burundi and the hard work of the Long Miles Coffee project. We found this coffee to be bright and complex, reminding us of citric qualities like Lemon and Kumquat orange, and cooling into red and purple fruits like Plum and Red Currant. Throughout this coffee maintains structure in the body that reminds us of Black Tea."
